Adelong Park is owned and operated by us, Peter and Denise Hennessy. Our farm is located at the foothills of the Blue Mountains at Brewongle 190km west of Sydney. The historical hamlet of Brewongle lies 15km east of Bathurst and 30km north-west of Oberon in the NSW Central West.
In 1979 we packed our five little girls into our orange Volvo and drove to a dot on the map called Brewongle. We purchased 200 acres, 50 cows and a tiny ‘weekender’ on a windy hill. The weekender immediately became our ‘every weekender’ and in 1986 we decided to base ourselves in the country. Over the last twenty-seven years the 200 acres has expanded into 2,100 acres. The current homestead bears virtually no resemblance to the weekender and the windy hill it was perched on is now our garden haven, which has been featured in the Australian Open Garden Scheme.
The farm is home to 200 Angus cows and their calves, 4 Angus Bulls, 2000 Border Leicester/Merino cross ewes and about 40 very contented Poll Dorset rams. There are also chickens, ducks, noisy guinea fowl and some very opinionated turkeys!
Some oats is grown to supplement the pasture feed and the oats grain is harvested in the summer. Lucerne is also grown and is cut and baled in the summer months.
We hope that as you arrive at Adelong Park, you will notice the many trees that line the driveway to your cottage and also line the many other driveways, stock routes, walking tracks and nature reserves that extend throughout the farm. As well as being wonderful aesthetically, the trees provide a windbreak and shade to the animals, they help prevent erosion of the soil in the paddocks and they encourage thousands of birds to take up residence on our farm. We have planted a mixture of Australian natives and European trees (nearly 40,000 in total) which abound in colour each autumn.
There is a permanent creek, which runs through the property as well as a number of dams. They provide wonderful spots to enjoy a picnic. The children can try their luck at yabbying! We have drawn a mud map for you, which sets out the many activities and places you can enjoy at Adelong Park. Some of these activities are walking and birdwatching, fishing and canoeing, picnicing and barbecueing.
In 2006 we will be enhancing many of our naural walking tracks for you to enjoy. We will be updating our mudmap accordingly.
If you are interested in experiencing a particular farming activity or event, you can refer to the Calendar of Events on Adelong Park and make your booking according to that. Please don’t hesitate to call Louisa if you have a specific query.
